Tandan School, Lamlong Village

Lamlong School is a community school founded in 2018. This school is in an interior village called Lamlong village in Chandel district of Manipur. There are 45 households, 200+ villagers with no school.

Lamlong village, is at the centre of 4 other tribal villages, inhabited by 2 different tribes. Due to its geographical advantage of being situated at the centre of all the villages, though it is underdeveloped, it has the capacity to reach out to the other surrounding tribal villages and subsequently to the rest of the interior tribal villages as well. With a boost to its educational system, the entire area stands to develop and in the next ten years more than a thousand children will be empowered to face the real world.

There has never been any kind of school setup previously, neither from the government nor any private persons. Subsequently, the youth of the village formed a school committee and got the whole village on-board-available materials like wood, bamboo etc. to build the school. The board/committee members contributed Rs 3,000/- each to procure other essentials like tin and hardware materials.

There are currently 62 students, 8 teachers and a small living facility where 27 students are boarders. The boarding/hostel is also run by the same school teachers. They wear multiple hats as subject-teachers, wardens, cooks and cleaning staff.

The village authority of Lamlong village who are also the school board members of Lamlong school wrote to Tandan Trust for support. Inspired by their community spirit, Tandan Trust founders visited the village and the school several times over the last year. During the visits, Tandan Trust founders had multiple conversations with the village leaders, school board members, teachers and parents of the students.

Tandan Trust has identified the need to support some bit of the children’s monthly fees, as well as nutrition intervention. Looking at the current living facility, Tandan Trust saw the need to help with some materials to improve the dining and study hall, the hostel rooms and the kitchen.
